Long known to be an allergen, lanolin is the grease or sebum, from the sebaceous glands of sheep's wool. When the wool is boiled, the lanolin is collected. The problem is, aside from the allergens, lanolin can also be saturated with pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and fertilizers. Sheep are dipped in pesticides and eat grass grown with fertilizers, contaminating the lanolin.

According to The Safe Shoppers Bible (Macmillan, 1995), 84 percent of a test sampling of wool contained diazinon, a neurotoxic contact poison that easily penetrates the skin barrier. The test sampling also showed dieldrin and DDT present. This can be a cause for concern when used on the nipples of nursing mothers.
